Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India, where all Indian software engineers
come home to roost. It used to be a great little pensioner's paradise once, before
they invented the PC. You could walk its tree lined avenues then while marvelling
at the fresh cool air, and not worry about getting run over by aggresive
drivers.
But the times have changed. Wealth has brought in a new lifestyle of glitzy
malls, conspicuous consumption, latest cars and gadgets. It has brought in its
own problems also in the wake: overcrowded streets, pollution, perpetual
shortages of water, electricity, infrastructure. And a looming large social problem,
that of great disparities in income.
Bangalore has its problems no doubt, but it remains a vibrant city. It also
remains, like most of India, a place full of contradictions. yesterday's small
town has given way to teeming metropolis, but deep in its heart, Bangalore is
still looking for its old town soul.
